The best AI boyfriend app for iPhone, for most romance readers, is Nomi or Kindroid. Both are free to download, both offer voice, and both are on iPhone and Android. Choose Replika for a gentler, everyday companion, and Character.AI if you want a ready-made book boyfriend from its character library. All of these apps are for adults only.
By Alma Martin · AI companion guide · Updated October 2026
I researched these apps from their official websites, terms of service and US App Store and Google Play listings, all checked on October 12, 2026.
I haven’t tested them hands-on for this guide, so I don’t rate chat quality. Instead, I tell you what each app offers, what it costs and what its rules say, so you can choose your own book boyfriend.
Key takeaways:
Best for iPhone: Nomi and Kindroid. Both are free to download, rated 17+ on the App Store, and both list voice features.
Best for Android: the same two. Both are on Google Play with a Mature 17+ rating.
Free AI boyfriend app? Every app here is free to download. Paid plans and credits unlock more, from $2.49 on the App Store.
AI boyfriend app with voice: Kindroid and Replika list real-time voice calls. Character.AI lists live voice calls. Nomi lists real-time voice messages.
18+ only: Replika, Nomi and Kindroid ban under-18s in their terms. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18s in late 2025.
What Is an AI Boyfriend App?
An AI boyfriend app is a chat app where you talk to a male AI character who can flirt, remember details about you and stay in a role. Some let you design him from scratch. Others let you pick from a library of characters.
For romance readers, the appeal is easy to understand. It’s the book boyfriend who talks back. I’ve written about why women read romance, and much of it comes down to emotional safety and being truly seen. AI boyfriend apps sell the same promise, so it’s worth reading the fine print.
How I Chose These Apps
I started with the apps people search for most alongside “AI boyfriend,” then kept only those I could verify. For each one I checked:
Price: the in-app purchase list on the US App Store.
Availability: whether it’s on the App Store, Google Play or the web.
Voice: whether the official listing mentions voice messages or calls.
Age rules: the minimum age in the app’s own terms.
If I couldn’t confirm a feature on an official page, I left it out.
What Are the Best AI Boyfriend Apps in 2026?
The AI boyfriend apps I researched, and what each one is best for.
1. Nomi: Best for a Long-Term Romance Arc
Nomi is built for an ongoing relationship with memory. Its App Store listing highlights long-term memory, “remembering things about you over time,” which matters if you want a slow-burn storyline that builds over weeks.
Platforms: iPhone (App Store, rated 17+) and Android (Google Play, Mature 17+).
Price: free to download. App Store in-app purchases include a Launch Plan at $9.99/month or $59.99/year, and a Standard Plan at $15.99/month, $39.99/quarter or $99.99/year. Credit packs start at $4.99.
Voice: “Send and receive voice messages in real time,” according to its listing.
Age rule: its terms say “If you are under the age of 18, you cannot use the Nomi.ai platform under any circumstances.”
2. Kindroid: Best for Customizing Your Book Boyfriend
Kindroid suits readers who want to write their love interest’s personality themselves. Its listing highlights generated selfies and “real-time voice calls.”
Platforms: iPhone (App Store, 17+) and Android (Google Play, Mature 17+).
Price: free to download. In-app purchases include a subscription at $15.99/month, $42.99 for 3 months or $159.99/year. There’s also Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99 (billing periods aren’t shown on the listing). Add-ons include audio credits ($14.99 for 500k) and selfie credits.
Voice: real-time voice calls.
Age rule: its legal page limits use to people “at least 18 years of age or the age of majority in their jurisdiction, whichever is greater.” Its age verification page explains that age can be verified through billing or through Yoti, an outside age-check service using a selfie or ID.
I’ve compared these two in detail in Kindroid vs Nomi. If neither fits, see my list of Kindroid alternatives.
3. Replika: Best for a Gentle, Everyday Companion
Replika is the longest-running name here, and it now pitches itself as an AI friend “to do life with.” Its homepage says it has “42,160,934 users worldwide” and is “Available for iOS and Android.”
Platforms: iPhone (App Store, rated 17+) and Android. Note that its Google Play listing showed a Teen rating when I checked.
Price: free to download. App Store in-app purchases include monthly plans at $7.99 and $14.99, annual plans at $49.99 and $69.99, and “Replika Platinum” at $89.99. The listing doesn’t explain how these tiers differ, so check inside the app.
Voice: “text, voice calls, and video,” according to its App Store description.
Age rule: its terms say “If you are under 18, you are not authorized to use the Services, with or without registering.”
One caution for romance readers: Replika’s current marketing focuses on friendship and “flourishing,” not romance. If you want a flirtatious book boyfriend, Nomi or Kindroid may fit better.
4. Character.AI: Best for Ready-Made Characters
Character.AI is a huge library of user-made characters, so you can find a love interest without building one. Its listing says you can “switch between AI chat and live conversations,” and creators can give characters voices.
Platforms: iPhone (App Store, 17+) and Android (Google Play, which showed a Teen rating).
Price: free to download. In-app purchases include Character.AI+ at $9.99 and Character.AI Lite at $2.49 or $4.99. It also sells “Charms” packs.
Voice: live voice calls with characters.
Age rule: Character.AI says it began removing open-ended chat for under-18 users on November 24, 2025. Its help center says adults flagged as under 18 can verify with a selfie through Persona, an outside verification service.
For more options like this, see my roundup of Character.AI alternatives.
5. Candy AI: An Adults-Only Web Option
Candy AI is a web-based companion site with “AI Boyfriend characters,” voice, images and video. It’s openly adult and describes itself as “uncensored.”
Platforms: browser only. Its site says “No installation is needed,” and I found no official Candy AI app on the US App Store.
Price: it advertises a free trial plus monthly, quarterly and yearly plans with tokens. I couldn’t load a pricing page, so I’m not quoting prices.
Voice: “Your companion can engage in voice conversations.”
Operator: EverAI Limited, Malta, per its homepage.
The site leads with “AI girlfriend” marketing, so the boyfriend side is a smaller part of it.
6. Boyfi: A Boyfriend-Focused iPhone App
Boyfi is one of the few apps built specifically around AI boyfriends. On the US App Store it’s rated 17+, with about 478 ratings averaging just under 4 stars when I checked.
Platforms: iPhone (App Store). I couldn’t confirm an Android version.
Price: free to download. In-app purchases show “Ameo App Premium” options from $9.99 to $69.99, plus voice-message packs from $4.99 and photo packs from $5.99. The listing doesn’t state billing periods.
Voice: sold as voice-message packs.
It’s a smaller developer (Runwayer Group Ltd), so read its privacy policy before you share anything personal.
Which AI Boyfriend App Is Best for iPhone?
For iPhone, I’d start with Nomi or Kindroid. Both are on the App Store, rated 17+, free to download, and both list voice. Nomi leans toward memory and long-term relationships. Kindroid leans toward customization and voice calls.
Replika and Character.AI are also on iPhone. Boyfi is iPhone-only as far as I could confirm.
Which AI Boyfriend App Is Best for Android?
On Android, Nomi and Kindroid are again my first picks. Both have Google Play listings rated Mature 17+.
Replika and Character.AI are on Google Play too, but both showed a Teen rating there, even though their own rules restrict romance features or open chat to adults. Candy AI works in a mobile browser on any phone.
Is There a Free AI Boyfriend App?
Yes, every app in this guide is free to download, but none is fully free. Each one sells subscriptions or credits inside the app. On the App Store, the cheapest plans I found were Character.AI Lite ($2.49 or $4.99), Replika ($7.99/month) and Nomi’s Launch Plan ($9.99/month).
What the free tier includes changes often, and the listings don’t spell it out. Try the free version before you subscribe.
Which AI Boyfriend Apps Have Voice?
Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI list live voice calls, while Nomi lists real-time voice messages. Candy AI advertises “voice conversations,” and Boyfi sells voice-message packs.
If voice matters most to you, check whether it’s included in the plan you choose or sold as separate credits. Kindroid and Boyfi both sell audio or voice add-ons.
My checklist before you download any AI boyfriend app.
Are AI Boyfriend Apps Safe and Private?
AI boyfriend apps are adult services that store very personal conversations, so treat them like any other app that holds your secrets. Here’s what I’d check:
Age rules: every app here is meant for adults, and the main ones state 18+ in their terms.
Data use: read the privacy policy before you share real names, addresses or photos. Replika’s privacy policy, for example, says it processes your personal data as a “data controller,” meaning it decides how your data is used.
Payments: Candy AI says purchases appear “under a neutral merchant name,” which some readers will want.
Emotional limits: these apps aren’t therapy. If you’re struggling, talk to a real person or a crisis line.
What Are Regulators Doing About AI Companions?
Regulators are paying close attention. In September 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission launched an inquiry into AI chatbots acting as companions. It ordered companies to explain their safety, advertising and data practices, including protections for children.
California’s SB 243, a law on companion chatbots, also took effect on January 1, 2026. It requires companion platforms to make clear you’re talking to an AI, and to have safeguards for minors and for users at risk of self-harm.
How Do I Choose the Right AI Boyfriend App?
Match the app to the kind of romance you like to read.
Slow burn: pick an app that emphasizes memory, like Nomi. My guide to romance tropes can help you build a storyline.
A specific dream hero: pick an app with deep customization, like Kindroid.
Variety: pick a character library, like Character.AI.
Low commitment: start with a free download, and set a monthly budget before any upgrade.
